Remote Patient Monitoring for Clinicians

Our client asked us to develop an IT solution that would allow them to track their patients better and be more proactive. Vicert designed a HIPAA-compliant backend enabling physicians and their care teams to react quickly to emergencies and improve healthcare delivery.

Challenge

Our client asked us to develop an app for remote patient monitoring. It was intended for physicians and their care teams. The app’s goal was to improve the reaction times of healthcare providers and allow them to react in real-time.

Initially, the app was designed as a notification system but pivoted into much more. We expanded it and incorporated it within the client’s EHR system, later allowing for its application in order entries and pharmacy systems.

Some of the features of our remote patient monitoring software were the following:

  • Inpatient and ED admit and discharges.

  • Rx filled by a doctor other than the PCP.

  • Abnormal lab values.

  • Request for an immediate consultation.

Even though there was an aggressive deadline in place, Vicert managed to develop a solution entirely in compliance with HIPAA regulations and a high level of security for protected health information.

Solution

We first had to reconcile the technological requirements with our client’s business needs in the project’s discovery phase. We understood their need for remote patient monitoring services and thus slowly began to develop our product.

By closely working with a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians and UX experts, we defined the necessary features of our software to maximize professional benefits for our client. Those were as follows:

  • Retrieving active and cumulative stream entries.

  • Displaying active and cumulative stream entries with appropriate icons and flags.

  • Displaying all stream entries for an individual member selected by a user.

  • Our patient monitoring system also showed all relevant information when a user clicked on the stream entry.

  • The delegation functionality is triggered when a user swipes left or right on a stream entry. If a delegation option is available for that specific entry, the clinicians can use the app created by Vicert. The app communicates with the HIPAA-compliant backend through a protected REST API.

We’ve also implemented several levels of security. Our remote patient monitoring software used authentication, through integration with the backend, to remove any cached data containing PHI/PII from the device at logout. The app was fully covered by the unit tests built using the XCTest and OCMock frameworks.

Benefits

In less than 45 days, we’ve delivered an app that was fully HIPAA-compliant. It was fully tested and ready for deployment on iOS application with backend functionality and integration interfaces.

Vicert created a mobile app for remote patient monitoring that was secure, scalable, flexible, and complete with EHR integration. Thanks to our application, the client’s physicians and care teams were able to:

  • React in real-time.

  • Offer emergency consultations.

  • Improve the speed and quality of care.
